Greggs have announced that to encourage healthier eating, they will be offering lower calorie doughnuts, which will be given priority display. The doughnuts are not intended to be “diet products”, but rather to offer customers a slightly healthier choice.
The bakery said that it will alter its doughnut displays so that the ringed doughnuts surround the jam-filled doughnuts, which contain more calories.
Speaking at a childhood obesity conference in London, Greggs’ chief executive, Roger Whiteside, said that ringed doughnuts would “take some of the calories out”.
He added: "People like big cakes, not little cakes... we know that we shouldn't be encouraging people to eat large cakes... but the problem is you have to go with demand."
According to Whiteside, ring doughnuts generally contain around 200 – 300 calories, whereas regular doughnuts contain between 300 – 400 calories.
A jam doughnut from Greggs contains 245kcal, whereas their glazed, ring doughnuts only have 191kcal.
A spokesperson for the company said that “encouraging healthy eating is a key priority”.
It is also worth noting that Greggs have reduced their sugar by 20% across the range.
